On 4 April 2008, members of the regimental hockey teams of The King's Own Calgary Regiment (RCAC), The Calgary Highlanders, and 14 (Calgary) Service Battalion gathered at Calgary's Centennial Arenas to retire the sweater of Corporal Nathan Hornburg. Hornburg had been killed in action in Afghanistan while serving with the Regular Force, recovering an armoured vehicle while under fire on 24 September 2007.

On St. George's Day, 25 April 2010, when two soldiers of his regiment received the Medal of Sacrifice from Lieutenant Colonel Richard Coates, Commanding Officer of the KOCR, Nathan Hornburg also posthumously received that award.

The annual "Loops for the Troops" run, an annual charity event, was established in his memory.
